Note: The following are instructions on how to use Google Authenticator for setting up two factor authentication (2fa). You are free to use another authentication application, if you choose.
1. Go to the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) on your smartphone.
2. Search for “Google Authenticator.”
3. Tap “Install” or “Get” to download and install the app.
1. Once installed, open Google Authenticator from your home screen.
2. If this is your first time, the app will ask you to begin setup by adding an account.
1. Log into the website or service you want to secure with two-factor authentication (2FA), such as Gmail, Facebook, or another platform.
2. Go to the security settings of that platform and enable two-factor authentication.
3. Select the option for Google Authenticator or “Authenticator App” when prompted.
4. The website will display a QR code (a black and white square barcode).
1. In the Google Authenticator app, tap the “+” icon at the bottom-right of the screen.
2. Choose “Scan a QR code.” Your camera will open.
3. Point your phone’s camera at the QR code displayed on the website. The app will automatically scan it and add the account.
1. After scanning, Google Authenticator will show a 6-digit code for that account. This code changes every 30 seconds.
2. When logging in to the website or service in the future, enter this 6-digit code after typing your password to complete the login.
