In Joshua 2 notice:

  • how fully the story of Rahab, who is already named in verse 1, dominates the chapter,
  • how much this foreign woman is heard within the story,
  • how quickly she acts, with the hiding already underway by verse 4,
  • how much Rahab elaborates about the events prompting her actions, including
    • what she knows about present circumstances,
      • that the Lord has given the land to this people poised beyond the river,
      • that the fear of this people has fallen upon Jericho, and
      • that all the people of the land “melt away” (9) before these people who are coming
    • what she knows about the causes of the present realities: “We have heard “ (10) about
      • the Red Sea and
      • the kings of the Amorites “devoted to destruction” (10),
  • how the people of Jericho found their “hearts melted” (11) and their spirit gone,
  • how Rahab declares “the Lord your God, he is God” (11),
  • how the fitting response to such an acknowledgement and such circumstances is to make a covenant with the people of this God, including
    • the promised blessing to “deal kindly” (12, 12, 14),
    • the thoroughly explained terms, especially the gathering, staying, and signaling (13-21),
  • how the chapter ends with Joshua being further confirmed- “Truly” (24)- in God’s plan and willing also to say “melt away” (24).
