In Joshua 15
notice that “allotment” (1) continues with almost the entire chapter devoted to the tribe of Judah as a whole,
marvel at the painstaking detail (1-12) offered in the calling out of the boundary of Judah’s place, surely a declaration of the importance of boundaries and a celebration of occupation,
see in the additional cataloging of cities (20-62) a further claim to possession and to fulfillment of God’s promise to provide a place for the children of Abraham through Isaac and then Jacob,
ponder the significance of what may seem like tedious lists of boundary markers and cities, rather like genealogies, but actually are purposeful placements of people in relation to actual physical places (as genealogies are purposeful placement of people in relation to actual people),
notice Caleb’s “it may be” (14:12) becomes becomes accomplished fact (15:14), as the strong old man demonstrates once again his determination to enact his devotion to God, even engaging in his own bestowal of life-sustaining springs (19), sought as a “blessing” (19), and
notice the recurring reference to incompleteness in clearing the land (63), in this instance the pesky Jebusites, “to this day” (63), remain with Judah “at Jerusalem” (63).
