In Joshua 16
notice that the allotting continues, this time for the descendants of Joseph’s two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, effectually giving Joseph a double portion,
remember that Jacob claimed Joseph’s two sons as his own (Genesis 48:5-6),
notice that Manasseh appears to receive a bigger portion, including portions on both sides of the river and yet Ephraim receives towns that were “set apart” (9) within the the territory of Mannaseh, “all those towns and villages” (9),
notice, once again, the failure to “drive out” (10) a people, this time the Canaanites from part of the possession of Ephraim, and
ponder the satisfaction of knowing boundaries and the difficulty that may well follow from the failure to “drive out” a people from a tribe’s bounded territory.
